Shimoni is a historic coastal settlement located in Kwale County on the southern coast of Kenya, near the border with Tanzania. The town lies approximately 80 kilometers south of Mombasa and directly opposite Wasini Island along the Indian Ocean. Although relatively small compared to Kenya’s major coastal towns, Shimoni is widely known for its historical significance, marine biodiversity, cultural heritage, and tourism activities centered around the nearby Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park.
The name “Shimoni” comes from the Swahili word “kishimo” meaning “a hole” or “cave,” referring to the famous coral caves found in the area. Over the centuries, Shimoni has evolved from a Swahili trading settlement into an important fishing, tourism, and conservation center along the East African coast.
